The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center aims to increase the
number of people who quit smoking and the number of clinicians
who help them do it. A key strategy to achieve this is informing
smokers and clinicians of the existence of quitlines, which
provide free, effective help. The national quitline number
routes calls from all over the state to the nearest quitline,
and the card is a simple, concrete way to direct smokers to
the number. A major activity of our center is generating calls
to the line, and we do this in part by amassing card orders
and promoting the card.
SCLC and key partners developed and focus group tested card
prototypes early last year. The card was first unveiled in
April 2005.
Because the card is clear, concise and concrete, many clinicians
like to hand it out to smokers to urge them to seek cessation
help. Clinician groups have used it to mobilize their members,
and smokers like to carry it in their wallet until they feel
ready to make the call. The card is based on one that has
been used for years to market the California Smokers’
Helpline, 1-800-NO BUTTS.
The national number, 1-800-QUIT NOW, was created using funds
provided through a special federal smoking cessation initiative
in September 2004. It serves as a router number. When a smoker
in any state calls the free number, he or she is automatically
sent to the appropriate quitline.
The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center has combined orders
and helped facilitate the production of these cards for several
state programs, educational leaders, and other groups. Combining
print orders of these cards allows the unit cost to decrease.
